The Phidippus audax that are plentiful around my home is recognizable, but is there enough detail in the photos to tell me what spider he is preying on?

Hmm.
I suspect your assumption was correct. I came across the small brown spider again today and I suspect it is a
Sittus
sp. male. But check out
this photo of a mating pair of
Phidippus regius
for comparison.

I'm curious if you actually saw the larger
audax
eat the smaller jumper. It looks a lot like mating behavior. The smaller spider certainly does not look like a typical
audax
, but they are notoriously variable and
Phidippus
hybrids are known. I'm pretty sure I've seen the smaller one around Davis but never knew the species.

Mating or munchies
I have to admit having made an assumption, as it seemed the
audax
was dragging away the smaller spider as I invaded its space with my camera.
