Taken in early May on prairie. Not sure what species of shield bugs are in this area and can't find any good online resources....any ideas?

Stink bug
This is a stink bug, family Pentatomidae, rather than a shield bug (family Scutellaridae, though lumped with pentatomids by some). I'd start with the genus Euschistus, very common over most of the continent. Shield bugs, by the way, have that triangular area between the wings (scutellum is the technical name),greatly expanded to cover the entire back of the insect, concealing the wings completely, or nearly so.
