Carrion beetle larva - Heterosilpha

Carrion beetle larva - Heterosilpha
Marin County, California, USA
April 21, 2011
Size: ~17 mm body length
Found crossing a dirt path in chaparral habitat.

How do you know the species?
Is this the only species know from the area?

Re: How do you know the species?
Don't know the species, that's why I left it at genus level.

Oops, silly me. But same question at genus level:
Is Heterosilpha the only Silphinae genus in the area?

Re: Oops, silly me. But same question at genus level:
Not sure how many genera actually occur at that location, but the only ones I have seen out there are Heterosilpha, and they are quite abundant at times. I think I have seen both species too, but not quite sure since I never photographed the adults. Going by their sheer abundance alone, I think it's pretty safe to call this one Heterosilpha, but I don't expect it to be identified to the species level. It was found in the same area as this individual:

The larvae of other genera found in California also look quite different, from what I've been able to tell from image searches.
