Beetles in cactus flower...help, please - Euphoria kernii

Beetles in cactus flower...help, please - Euphoria kernii
Williamson County, Texas, USA
April 30, 2006
Size: approx 1 cm
For a few days, each cactus flower holds a teeming population of beetles, ants, and bugs, with visits from flies, bees, and wasps. The mound of anthers seethes as insects wallow in that abundance of pollen.

This year, the commonest visitor to the magenta flowers has been this kind of beetle, with a ground color ranging from pale beige to dull orange, and the same black markings.

Thanks...
...for the ID. It's really a hoot to watch the writhing mass of pollen-hunters in one of the cactus flowers. I don't know how the flowers are signalling the insects (the flowers don't smell particularly sweet or strong to me) but the insects will fly into me then quickly down to the flower while I'm trying to photograph it. A lot of shots end up cut because there's a blurry insect in the middle, on its way in to the pile of groceries.
