Horsefly - Hybomitra lasiophthalma - female

Horsefly - Hybomitra lasiophthalma - Female
Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
June 13, 2004
Shot in my front yard. Looks like a female.

Hybomitra lasiophthalma (image 5090)
A nice photo of a female (eyes not touching)of this species, angle is good in that it shows all the critical diagnostic characters. The 4 green bands (often edged with red, depending on viewing angle)on a dark background, the obvious ocellar tubercle at top of frons between the eyes, and one can even see the short hair on the eyes = Hybomitra. The spotted wings, abdominal pattern, and the shiny subcallus (shiny black bump immediately above the base of the antennae)= lasiophthalma. A very widespread species, from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, south to Texas and Georgia.

Wow thanks Tony!
You know your horseflies! This is really great:)
