Moved from Aculepeira. ID based on range and dorsal pattern.

Moved from ID Request. Aculepeira packardi is the only one Steve Lew lists for CA, but it's either young or an unusual specimen. It looks more like the undescribed species that Rod has told me about here in WA.

Am I the only one...
...who's curious what the frothy mass is? :-)

That does seem most likely... I had also considered something like this:



But, the empidids probably don't just leave those "nuptial gifts" lying around. :-)

 
Spittlebug
I just assumed the froth to be from spittlebugs; it looks the same as what my wife finds in her garden.

We would have made the same suggestion
as Max - Aculepeira

I was considering Aculepeira, but I'm not sure at all.
