Grasshopper - Melanoplus differentialis

Grasshopper - Melanoplus differentialis
Springfield, Virginia, USA
July 20, 2004
Anybody know what species of grasshopper this is? It's definitely the biggest one I've seen around my yard.

Moved
Nice shot. I created a placeholder guide page for the Differential Grasshopper and moved your image there. I hope to fill out the guide soon.

differential grasshopper
This is a differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentialis. The large size (for Melanoplus), and herringbone pattern on the hind femur ("thigh") make this an easy ID. Can come in a bright yellow phase, too.
