Summer Azure - Celastrina neglecta

Summer Azure - Celastrina neglecta
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
May 6, 2006
Small blue butterfly. Not sure how to tell the difference between Summer and Appalachian Azures. My guide says Summer - early May in NC, and Appalachian - mid May. Summer is also more common.

Confirmed
ID by Dr. David Wright - 5.xii.06

Appalachian
feeds exclusively on Black Cohosh which seems to occur in this locality. Date seems too early for Summer, moving to Appalachian. Excellent photo.
I asked Dr David Wright to look at this image. His comment "This is C. neglecta. The Cumberland Co. area does not have a neglectamajor population. The early May date is OK for the beginning of the "summer" neglecta flight in this region."
Moved.
