a wasp? - Ophion - male

a wasp? - Ophion - Male
Delray Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
May 8, 2006
Size: approximately 1"
the abdomen is the same color as the rest of this insect , the sunlight makes it look brighter. I thought this may be related to ichneumon wasps ??

Moved
Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Ophion
Male

Maybe.
There are other entire families of wasps that can resemble this, though, namely the Rhopalosomatidae. I don't know yet how to tell them apart with any degree of authority.

Short tailed ichneumon
I found a picture in a field guide that confirms my suspicion and also agrees with you that there are many species.
