What in the world? - Atta texana

What in the world? - Atta texana
Vidor, Orange County, Texas, USA
May 8, 2006
Size: 3/4 in
Went outside Sunday morning and these were everywhere digging holes in the ground. Some had wings some didn't. Would like to know what in the world it is and if it can hurt my kids.

wasp
im thinking gall wasp. a gall is a plant tumor and this is an example of one organism that causes them

but ant makes more sense because wasps dont loose their wings, and gal wasps dont dig in the ground in colonies
