I found a Syrphid Fly in the guide at

http://www.bugguide.net/node/view/936/bgimage

with a similar black anvil shape on the abdomen. There are three bold white bands on the abdomen with black between and a black tip. It was about an inch long, on a common wildflower that I have yet to learn.
