Promethea Moth - Callosamia promethea - male

Promethea Moth - Callosamia promethea - Male
East Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA
May 6, 2006
Ventral view of a freshly eclosed male Promethea. The opening in the coccoon is visible at the bottom of the photo. Host plant is a sassafras sapling, time of day late afternoon (5pm). I spotted it while it was pumping up its wings; it took off ~5' later, flying directly up into the top of the canopy.

Nice find
- it's rare to see the underside of these guys, too!
