Hardwood Stump Borer - Mallodon dasystomus - female

Hardwood Stump Borer - Mallodon dasystomus - Female
Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 9, 2004
Detail of head, antennae, pronotum. Note the fine teeth on the sides of the pronotum, which distinguishes this from Prionus, for instance.

Phil Harpootlian commented (on another image) as follows:
(This photo) "is diagnostic (for Mallodon) - pronotum with sides arcuate, mandibles pointed forward (not downward) and antenna inserted from projection."

Stenodontes?
Reminds me of a female Stenodontes. The two are very difficult to separate. You may be correct, I am not an expert on prionids:-)

Long beetle
I saw something very similar the other night when it alighted next to my porch light. It was about one and one quarter inches long. Rich brown color above; lighter below. Head was black. I thought of taking a picture, but that was before I noticed it was missing a first leg. I had a feeling Patrick would take up the slack.

will check on this, good point
Now, I thought I had differentiated correctly based on Yanega, which describes and illustrates both genera, but I'll double-check. (I don't have the book with me here.) I also have photos of the underside, which will perhaps help determine the sex.

Thanks for the quality control check--always appreciated.
