Northern fungus-growing ant in Missouri - Trachymyrmex septentrionalis - female

Northern fungus-growing ant in Missouri - Trachymyrmex septentrionalis - Female
Shaw Nature Reserve near Gray Summit, Franklin County, Missouri, USA
May 12, 2011
Size: worker 3.75mm, queen 4.75
I found the characteristic ramp-shaped pile of excavated soil, then lifted a small piece of wood near the base of it. Recent wet, cool weather allowed them to start a fungus garden quite near the surface.
