Small, black wasp? - Tiphia - male - female

Small, black wasp? - Tiphia - Male Female
Urbana, Frederick County, Maryland, USA
May 10, 2006
Size: between 1/4 and 1/2 inch
These have been swarming around my and my neighbors houses. I've seen them mating under the leaves of trees as well (multiple males, single female). I'm assuming that the larger ones in this image are females and the others are males. These critters met an unfortunate demise in a bowl of water... I'm assuming they are some type of wasp. Mostly I'm trying to rule out flying ant. Thanks.

Tiphia sp
These wasp are a type of Tiphia. They could be Tiphia vernalis but I am not sure. I work with Tiphia vernalis here in TN, we use them in different test along with Japanese beetles. The wasp female digs down into the ground and lays an egg on the Japanese beetle grub. They are a biocontrol for Japanese beetles.
