Formica (Fusca group) subsericea? - Formica podzolica

Formica (Fusca group) subsericea? - Formica podzolica
Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, USA
May 19, 2011
Size: Length ~ 6-9 mm
James, specimens shown here were trying to drag this leaf into one of many entrances into a small subterranean colony in a bare mound (no vegetational thatch) of packed dirt. I don't see too many all black ants of this size in our area. Dominant Formica in our area are usually black and red and seem to fit into into the Rufa group, I think. I'm hoping for correction or confirmation of identity. I can provide multiple images from a short video clip if required. Thank you!

Unfortunately...
There are four species in the "subsericea complex" in the area, and from the picture this could be any of them, though most likely not glacialis, argentea. That still leaves subsericea, podzolica. They are actually more common than the bicolored ones, but perhaps less noticeable. But you're on the right track. Additional images could be helpful.

Thanks, James!
Hmmm...I'll definitely have to collect some of our local ants while photographing moths in the coming weeks. I'll contact you about mailing specimens. ;-)
