Most often these simple shallowly buried pupae belong to skippers. I've let quite a number I've dug up over the years hatch out inside, and all have been one species of skipper or another.

Why is this labelled Large Yellow Underwing?
Title should be edited unless you have some evidence on which to base that ID (e.g. an adult Large Yellow Underwing emerged from it).

Could this be killing my 'heather' plants?
Several of my 'heather' plants have been dying the last few weeks. When I pull the dead plants out of the ground I am finding these moth pupas. Are these moth pupas killing my plants? If so, what can I do to stop it from continuing to happen?

 
Not a likely culprit
- all the digging caterpillars would do is perhaps damage a few roots. Highly unlikely to kill a healthy plant.
