Size: ~8-9mm
Nectaring on Eriophyllum pringlei.
ID by Neal Evenhuis (Bishop Museum, Honolulu, HI).

The genus Aphoebantus Loew is classified in the subfamily Anthracinae, tribe Aphoebantini.
Worldwide, there are 79 species in the genus; 45 - by my count- occur in California. (Palaearctic:12; Nearctic:64; Neotropical:3)

Common names
How about "low flies", "trail squatters", or "spindle butts"? Call this one the "Chocolate-winged Spindle-butt", A. transitus.

I'm afraid you will not find common names for the great majority of insects, perhaps because they are not commonly observed.
