Monarch chrysalis - Danaus plexippus

Monarch chrysalis - Danaus plexippus
Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA
May 14, 2006
The fresh chrysalis about 38 hours later. Last night (Saturday) the caterpillar was hanging in the J position, 24 hours after making the silk button (on Friday evening), and by this morning (Sunday) had pupated.

The chrysalis is located on the underside of a Virginia Creeper leaf, about 6 feet from the ground and about 20 feet from the nearest milkweed.

Great series!
I hope that we get to see the emergence too. So the caterpillar travelled at least 20 feet from the host plant! That is a lot of crawling.

I checked that estimate today
and I was way off. She crawled at least 35 feet horizontally and five vertical feet to reach this point.
