Orb web spider - Neoscona crucifera

Orb web spider - Neoscona crucifera
Normal, McLean County, Illinois, USA
September 23, 2006
I don't know if the picture quite shows it, but this spider's legs were very spiny. Two other spiders that appeared to be of the same species spun webs elsewhere on the same porch at the same time. I failed to get a measurement, and the picture isn't all that great, but hopefully someone out there can identify this one anyway!

Moved from Orb Weavers.

Moved from ID Request. A ventral view helps with ID. I don't suppose you have one?

I don't have a ventral view,
I don't have a ventral view, unfortunately, as I couldn't get a good shot of the spider from the other side. My camera (as you can probably tell from this less-than-stellar photo) isn’t well suited at all to macro shots. Can you still see enough to agree or disagree with the tentative ID as a barn spider?

Also, I don’t quite know how BugGuide works, but I was concerned that your moving my picture might mean that others won't see my ID request. Is that so, or does this make it more likely that spider experts *will* see it? Thanks for your help!

N. crucifera likely
I do agree that it is most likely a N. crucifera, but I wouldn't call that species a barn spider. Common names can get pretty tricky... since they often change by region. Araneus cavaticus is usually called the Barn Spider.

Don't worry about the other editors not seeing the image. John B. and I are the two editors that usually place these spiders.

Thanks again for all that inf
Thanks again for all that information.

Can't be certain
but we suggest you check out Neoscona crucifera
