You can see the tracheae through the abdomen!

Defined as
"Trachea. (Plural tracheae). One of the minute tubes which permeate the insect body and carry gases to and from the various organs etc. They open to the air at the spiracles" - just to save any other amateurs from having to look that up. (I got that from Coleoptera.org)

From comments in the guide, I don't think this can be confused with anything else. I just saw one yesterday - lovely, aren't they?

They are pretty nice. The best thing about them though is that they are rather retiring. The deerflies, on the other hand....
