Basilica Orb Weaver - Clustering Behavior - Mecynogea lemniscata

Basilica Orb Weaver - Clustering Behavior - Mecynogea lemniscata
Stone Mountain State Park, Dekalb County, Georgia, USA
May 30, 2011
While hiking one of the trails on the back side of Stone Mountain in GA, I encountered this (near) dead sapling covered with webbing. On closer inspection (see detail photo), I found that the webs were those of a large number of Basilica Orb Weaver individuals and showing the distinctive shape of Mycenogea lemniscata. The webs seemed to be thoroughly interconnected.
