Orange Ants - Lasius aphidicola

Orange Ants - Lasius aphidicola
Cairo Woods, Louisa County, Iowa, USA
May 30, 2011
Size: 4-5 mm
Found on rotting wood; under bark of a fallen tree.

Moved
Ants' lengths are reported as outstretched length from base of the mandibles to tip of the abdomen, or commonly head length + thorax length + gaster (abdomen) length, thus for this species about 3.5mm.

Anyway, a common ant inhabiting moist soil and rotting wood across North America -- Possibly a separate species from the Eurasian ant that goes by the same name.
