Unknown Moth - Callosamia angulifera
Appalachian Trail, near Snickers Gap, Clarke County, Virginia, USA
June 4, 2011
Size: wingspan was about 6"
I've tentatively identified this insect as a giant silkworm moth (Saturniidae). The closest match online appears to be the cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia). However, I'm not sure if the wing markings are really the same.
