Those spines are cool. If you look closely, you can see hints of them in at least a couple of species of Stratiomys:



I'll be interested in seeing what the experts have to say.

 
Scutellar spines in Stratiomys
Martin gave some interesting ideas on possible utility of the spines in a comment here.

By the way, this is a male (in this group, like most flies, males are holoptic(1), and females dichoptic(2)).
