Whoops... I should have said, there was a larva inside... I hadn't looked at it under magnification. Turns out this is a moth gall rather than a midge gall.

Well that identification help
Well that identification helps to identify some of my moth photos. (This comment was actually supposed to be on another photo that I took, but the identification still helps:))

I found a bunch of these today and opened one; there was in fact a midge larva inside.

Same as these:

It would be great if you could collect some of these and try to raise them, or at least cut one open and see what's inside.

yes
went back and found this exact leaf, have not found anymore yet. I have it in a ziplock with a small wet tissue. probably not the best way, but we will see what emerges.

Heliozela
A Ziploc with damp tissue is fine. As you undoubtedly have seen by now, the larva cuts out part of the gall and makes a case out of it. It will spend until next spring as a larva inside the case, before pupating and finally emerging as an adult in late April or early May. Once the weather turns cool in fall, put the rearing container in the fridge or on an enclosed porch or other unheated area, then bring it back indoors at the end of March. Good luck.
