Syrphid Fly - Temnostoma dachous

Syrphid Fly - Temnostoma dachous
York River State Park, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA
May 18, 2006
Size: Approx. 3/4"
Can anyone ID this syrphid fly? It appears to be a yellow jacket mimic.

female Temnostoma sp.
Hello jason,
Well, I can't give you a species ID from a picture, but I can tell you that the syrphid is a female in the genus Temnostoma! See those black fore legs sticking out? They wave with them and in this way these resemble the long antennae of real wasps, making the mimicry even more convincing!
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards
