Down by the water's edge,
especially where it's a little muddy -- not just sandy -- and where the water is either standing (pool, pond, catchment basin) or very slow-moving. Just sit, squat or kneel for a minute and watch for movement. From any distance they blend in very well with their background. You can also try to cause their movement by passing your hand or an object low over the moist soil within a couple feet of the water line.
