European Earwig? - Forficula auricularia

European Earwig? - Forficula auricularia
Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA
June 16, 2011

Moved
Moved from Earwigs.

yes, male F. auricularia

What are the distinctive characteristics of a male?
How can one tell the difference between male and female earwigs?

Cerci
The easiest way to distinguish males/females is the shape of the cerci (pincers on the abdomen). The differences vary between species but in this species the female has evenly curved cerci while the males have a noticeable tubercle.

Female and male
