Salticidae jumping spider with honey bee - Phidippus octopunctatus

Salticidae jumping spider with honey bee - Phidippus octopunctatus
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
October 11, 1998
Size: BL ~ 14 mm
This is a large jumping spider at about 14 mm. It was seen in Sentenac Canyon with a large prey. We checked honey bees and workers range from 10-15 mm. Is it possibly a Phidippus?

Phidippus
A large western species that is gray in color and has no visible pattern makes me think P. octopunctatus.

Phidippus species
Thanks for your suggestion. I will try to check it out.

Nice find.

Salticid diversity
Thanks! Today I checked Jim Berrigan's list of spiders of San Diego County. He lists about 19-20 species. I had no idea that jumping spiders were so diverse.

Whoops! I meant 19-20 GENERA! And 51 species.
