Large moth - Eumorpha achemon

Large moth - Eumorpha achemon
Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
June 17, 2011
Size: Body is about 5 cm long
Moth observed at 9am. We believe it had just emerged from its cocoon, because it was damp, and dried off while we watched it. The wings look torn, but the moth is perfectly symmetrical, and the apparent holes in the wings are dark coloration. Similarly, the wings look curled, but that is an illusion of the shading. Amazing protective coloration.
