Ochlerotatus
This is an Ochlerotatus, but what is visible takes it to couplet 19 of Darsie and Ward(1), or couplet 14 of Wood et al.(2), so I would need to see the tarsal claws to continue keying it.
Nice images by the way!

Sean
i think i found an ID. i never noticed that broad median reddish stripe on the scutum. what do you think of Oc. fitchii? it also seems to have some plae scales on the wings

...
I do not honestly know. My Darsie and Ward only goes past couplet 19 with the claw shapes. If you have another reference, then let me know. I should probably get it.
The pale scales on the wing are taken care of in couplet 15.

check out
couplet 23 on page 39 in darsie and ward.

...
It could be. The thing is, what about the other options like riparius and aloponotum? Actually, I just answered my own question. The ranges are wrong. I would agree on

fitchii it is then.
fitchii it is then.

Sean - It doesn't surprise me that Bugguide has a big audience, and lots of folks that will offer off-hand opinions. But I'm truly grateful when the opinion is supported by real familiarity with the bug, and reference to a key. Thanks for the diagnosis.
