Is there fine hair
Is there fine hair on the thorax of this fly? I belive I caught one of these yesterday. This fly looks very much like the T. gladiator except I noticed from the photo stygius seems to have more hair. Could you give insight on separating the two? Thanks, Tony!

Thorax is covered with
white hair, but this can get rubbed off to show the underlying reddish cuticle. Stygius vs. gladiator: stygius smaller, thorax white contrasting with the almost black abdomen; gladiator large, thorax purplish red same colour as abdomen.

this is a Tabanid. wouldn't you love getting bit by him?

Her:-)
A male tabanid can bite me any time:-) They don't have the mouthparts for cutting into me. Females like this one on the other hand....
