Butterfly or Moth...found dining on parsley plant

Moved from ID Request.

black swallowtail catterpillar
this is the caterpillar of the black swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes)

Thank you
Wasn't sure, last time I tried to "hatch" a caterpillar for my daughter, it became a moth. I saw my first Black Swallowtail Sunday, the caterpillar is just as pretty :)

you're welcome
by my best estimate, the caterpillar will take about 3-4 weeks to make a chrysalis. then it will be another 3 or 4 weeks before it hatches

I'll wager on faster,
probably less than half that time - will be fun to see :0).

They moved
It appears the two that were hanging out on the parsley have moved or were eaten :(

they were too young to move away from their foodplant
so they were probably eaten. still keep an eye out though, another butterfly could lay eggs on the plant.
