Boll's Grasshopper - Spharagemon bolli - female

Boll's Grasshopper - Spharagemon bolli - Female
Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia, USA
June 21, 2011
Located in a well-established residential area in Albany in southwest Georgia. Photographed where found in an alley near various native and non-native grasses, shrubs and large pine trees. It was fairly approachable, and allowed 3 photos before flying off. It flew well and may have had yellow/cream colored wings (seen by another person who does not love insects as the photographer does).

Hi Roy,
This one has bothered me since I "identified" it. The very wide hind femur and low pronotal crest are odd for S. cristatum. I also notice now that there is apparently a dark ring on the hind tibia (barely visible) as in S. bolli. So, I have to change my mind and go with Spharagemon bolli. It's a little embarrasing to admit that I sometimes goof - but I do - sorry about that.

Still, the coloring and a few other characters of the insect's structure bother me about it being S. bolli as well. Just a thought, but I can't help wondering, if perhaps, these two species might on rare occasions produce a hybrid, and perhaps you found one (???). Probably though, it's just a strikingly marked S. bolli.

Moved from Ridgeback grasshopper.

David,
I really appreciate your time and outstanding expertise. I learn a little more with each one of these. Thanks again, Roy

Looks like a female Spharagemon cristatum
