American Dog Tick - Dermacentor variabilis - female

American Dog Tick - Dermacentor variabilis - Female
San Leandro, Alameda County, California, USA
May 15, 2006
Size: 16mm
I pulled this off my dog. I'm pretty sure this tick came from Mt Diablo State Park, and after I got home it got transferred from me to my dog. Despite all my efforts not to bring any ticks home, when there are three ticks to each blade of grass it's hard to avoid them and hard to pick them all off before heading back home.
