Size: about 6 mm
The second of two of these unusual ambush bugs to be seen in our backyard gardens during the spring of 2005.

Macrocephalus
This is a Macrocephalus sp. which is separated from the other Nearctic macrocephaline genus Lophoscutus by the large pale scutellar spot. The species prehensilis belongs in Lophoscutus which removes it from consideration here.

and placed your photos there. There is not a lot of information on this genus. This is likely
Macrocephalus prehensilis

, size given as 5-6 mm, and ranges west to Texas
(

. It is hard to say--there are very few photos of this genus around--I am just looking at the description and the stated range.
Macrocephalus cimicoides
is similar, but larger, 9-11 mm, with stronger ridges on pronotum, also found in Texas, according to Slater
