Chrysops - Chrysops flavidus -

The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Texas, USA

Size: about 2/3 of an inch

We found this on our trampoline, and snapped the photo. Since then, we have pored through this and many other sites, and think it may be a chrysops- a deer fly. (Or could it be a syrphid?) Can anyone confirm this or correct us? Our family is trying hard to identify all the residents of our backyard. Thanks for any help!

I agree, it is surely no Syrphid and it looks like a species of Chrysops to me..

Yes, a Deerfly

Unfortunately the wing pattern is not sharp. However, the body pattern is reminiscent of Chrysops flavidus, a species that does occur in Texas.

Keep looking, Texas probably has the highest diversity of Tabanidae in NA - perhaps more than 100 species!
