firefly beetle - Ellychnia

firefly beetle - Ellychnia
Bandon, Coos County, Oregon, USA
June 11, 2011
I think it's a firefly beetle, genus Ellychnia, most likely E. greeni, E. facula, or E. hatchi. It would climb to the top of a grass blade, pause there, and then jump off and climb another grass blade.

Scrub forest at sea level.

The smaller critter isn't a target, but of course it would be nice to know what it is.

the smaller critter is much more interesting
some kind of former 'Ctenicera' -- doesn't look familiar...
you must be right about FF ID options; hope others narrow it down

Selatosomus?
Thanks for the pointer. The Ctenicera guide page says most species are being transferred out, so I had a look at the tribal level: looks like any of three pale-marked species of Selatosomus (BugGuide has much sharper images than mine).

slender body inconsistent with Selatosomus, imho
[those tend to be rather heavyset]
this color scheme is rather common among NA prosternines, as far as i can tell, while great many ex-ctenicerans are still unassigned to currently recognized genera, it's a work in progress. i would really appreciate your effort to fetch us more pix of this sp. and other clickers --especially if supported by voucher specimens: the group is really tough, so having images of reliably ID'd [rather than best-guessed] specimens would make a lot of difference.

smaller critter
Thanks. I won't be back to the immediate area at least this year (I'm in Seattle). The creature does appear in every one of my 13 shots of the firefly, but is blurrier or redundant in most. I can post a slight enlargement of this one and a face-on view, hopefully within a day or two. -- Posted those.
