satyr comma (Polygonia satyrus) - Polygonia comma
mattoon, off hwy d, woods by church hill, shawano County, Wisconsin, USA
May 19, 2006
i started seeing them like 3 weeks ago about 1 to 2 weeks aftyer i saw the first eastern commas of the year

Gray Comma
This is Polygonia progne. The dark hind wing with small isolated pale spots by the hindwing margin, and the lack of a dark markings in the middle of the hind wing are both characteristic.

Not satyr, I think -
for one thing, the hind wing doesn't have the central dark spot listed here as an identifying characteristic.

Looks a lot like this Eastern Comma to me - what makes you think it's not this species?
