Aphid with Shriveled Wings

Aphid with Shriveled Wings
47.63061N 52.68760W (WGS84), Logy Bay, Northeast Avalon, Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada
July 5, 2011
Size: 3mm body length
I’m usually quite fascinated with ‘bugs’ and the term ‘ugly’ rarely comes to mind. This individual is the rare exception. What an ‘ugly’ bug. I’m pretty sure it’s an aphid. Unlike most of the rather pretty green aphids that I’ve photographed this one makes it rather hard to appreciate any beauty. Why are the wings so shriveled? Is it about to die? It appeared active enough as it walked although I never saw it fly. I guess it couldn’t with those wings.
