Longhorn Beetle - Prionus laticollis

Longhorn Beetle - Prionus laticollis
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
June 29, 2011
Scaphinus?
This specimen was a pool rescue. By the time I got to it, it was still alive, but just barely.

I would have guessed
something in Prionus

But I'm far from an expert.

I think
you're right!
Looks like this one:

Prionus pocularis

ID confirmed by Doug Yanega:
"too brownish for laticollis, I think, so probably pocularis"

Even the experts get it wrong...
Even the experts get it wrong sometimes. This is a teneral male P. laticollis. I have two brown ones in my collection just like this. You can tell it is laticollis for sure by the smaller eyes that are more widely spaced as compared to the pocularis image posted above.

Here is another brown latcolis that someone else posted earlier.

I asked Doug Yanega to reconsider....
From Doug Yanega:
"No, I was not at all sure of that one, which is why I told Vassily that I thought it was probably pocularis, instead of saying definitely pocularis. The specimens I'd had to examine when preparing my guide did not include any laticollis as brown as the one in the photo, so my initial impression was based on that feature. Vassily only sent me the one image, as well. Examining the whole set (especially http://bugguide.net/node/view/542271/bgimage), I would agree that this is not pocularis. Even the experts can change their mind. ;-) "

Such Controversy!
I didn't realize I would cause so much trouble in here!!

Thank you, very much, folks, for your patience and perserverance in ID'ing this one!
