Fly larvae aggregation

Fly larvae aggregation
West Foss Farm, Durham, New Hampshire, USA
November 7, 2010
Size: 1.5 cm?
Found under some leaf litter. It was cold and wet that morning. Any idea (a) what the adults look like and (b) what where they doing there? Is this sort of concentration normal? Do they do this in preparation for cold weather, or were they concentrated there because that's where the food was?

In length, they were about the same as the with of someone's thumb nail.
