wasps or ants found on treated lumber potting bench. unclear if they were simply ON it, or were IN it somewhere.... Move about like wasps, but have many features of ants.

Both, in the sense that ants are derived from wasps. But yes, definitely ants, these live in hollow twigs and other preformed cavities in stems, branches and trunks.
