spittlebug nymph on birch - Clastoptera obtusa

spittlebug nymph on birch - Clastoptera obtusa
Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 11, 2011
Size: 4mm
The spittle containing this white nymph was mucilaginous, a type of spittle I haven't encountered before. Found on a white birch (Betula papyrifera) in my back yard. Several others were also present, located in the joint just below the leaves.

Clastoptera obtusa
That's the kind of spittle that Clastoptera make. You can see that this nymph has shifted position on the plant, leaving its old position on the petiole (with lots of tiny bubbles) for a more advantageous position head-down, where it is starting a new spittle mass.
