Millipede - Oxidus gracilis
Georgia, USA
May 25, 2006
Size: 10-15 mm
These milipedes congregate after dark on wet moss growing on a log in a rain-barrel ecosystem. Color ranges from a darker hue on the larger specimins to lighter hue on smaller specimins. Possibly sex differences as opposed to age differences ?

They sort of look like the black ones I've seen after a heavy rain shower. Note: there were hundreds of them!

These were taken on one of my "rain barrels" (garden pond in a barrel).
There is a partially submerged log in one that stays constantly wet.
Moss (seen in second image) grows on the wet area - this is where the millipedes have taken residence. Unfortunately they have "de-nuded" most of the moss off of the log in just a few weeks. When I see them, I relocate them to my compost pit now.
