northern bush katydid - Scudderia septentrionalis - male

northern bush katydid - Scudderia septentrionalis - Male
medway, norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
July 1, 2010
Size: 11/3"
The northern bush katydid is very intresting specimen. They are a beutiful green coloration with a bit of dark yellow on their feet and front forelegs. They are slow moving but fast flyers. when looking for them you might not relize they are right in your face. they are the first big katydids out.

Their song is one of the most complex of the bush katydids(scuderria). It consists of a serries of ticks then a fast serries of buzzy notes, usualy 5 to 10. the song is easy to hear.

These northern bush katydids are almost everywhere they have increaced in being common. They prefer mixed, broadleaf woods or rural backyards and gardens. they mostly are high up in trees butwill occasionly be found in smaller shrubs. you may try your luck in scaring one out of a tree and following it to its next location. I have found if you shine a light at the area they are in they will somtimes come towards the light. They can also be found arround pourch lights. If you are patient they are easy to collect.
