Frosted Elfin - Callophrys irus - female

Frosted Elfin - Callophrys irus - Female
Scotland County, North Carolina, USA
April 10, 1999
Ovipositing on Lady Lupine, either Lupinus villosus or Lupinus diffusus. (These are the two species of lupines with entire leaves, and I believe, the only lupines in this area.) Frosted Elfin is always associated with patches of this lupine in the North Carolina Sandhills. The Frosted Elfin hunter cruises the back roads in April, seeking patches of this lupine, which are found largely on bare roadsides.
