Ms A bites beetle - Araneus andrewsi - San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California, USA July 12, 2011 Size: .75 in
Ms A, after resting a few days following her egg case construction has woven her largest orb yet. However she has located it across my little porch and in front of the door. Luckily there is room to duck under to get to the garden. Now that she has sealed the entrance to her old retreat with her egg case she has relocated her bedroom to a crack in the porch roof a few feet away. She snared a beetle tonight and I was able to capture the post wrap-up bite. Note her abdomen reduction from that of her pre egg case days. Her egg case still seems inert. Did she make an eggless case? I suppose time will tell. Update: August16, a month later Ms A has not been in residence for over a week. She had made a couple grand efforts at webs but seemed to be getting quite frail as her abdomen shrank to at least a quarter of its maximum size. Her egg case remains silent as of yet. Her life seems to have lasted almost exactly one year.
