Very large wolf/fishing spider - Hogna

Very large wolf/fishing spider - Hogna
Cadillac(just south of, actually), Wexford County, Michigan, USA
May 25, 2006
Size: 2" or more.
I came accross this spider near Cadillac, Michigan. The general area was a thick woodland. It struck me due to the very large size of the subject.

Moved
Moved from Wolf Spiders.

Lycosidae.
This is one of the wolf spiders. Fisher spiders are generally more "sprawling," and tend towards arboreal habits. I usually fisher spiders on tree trunks, the walls of sheds, etc.

Is the size here atypical? I
Is the size here atypical? I've never seen one that large(as compared to the quarter in the photo, I placed for a comparison). When it ran, I at first thought it was a small mouse or something!

The size is within a normal range...
Wolf spiders are some of the biggest spiders most people will run across in the US/Canada. "Your" spider is quite impressive in size (I love finding spiders of that size!!), but believe it or not, some species can get even bigger. The Carolina Wolf Spider (Hogna carolinensis) can exceed 1.5" in body length, and with the legs... upwards of 5+ inches.

thanks!
I'd love to find one that large, but alas, I am too far north for the Carolina.
